Kering and J Crew call for urgent investment in regenerative agriculture
The luxury conglomerate and American retailer have sponsored a new report and framework from Textile Exchange in a bid to scale regenerative agriculture and cut fashion's carbon emissions.
Fumbles of fast fashion: Industry, resale experts weigh in on impact
Emily Sifrit, Manteno native and owner of the fashion line eKaye, creates and designs custom wear for clientele in Kankakee County.
She said consumers are beginning to understand the effects of fast fashion — such as clogging landfills, using more CO2 than aviation and shipping combined and about 20 per cent of global wastewater coming from textile dyeing — and they are demanding change.
"I think the biggest negative is the lack of transparency about where the clothes go," she said.
"[Consumers are] starting to learn how much waste it is creating. Because we're asking questions; we're learning how it was handled."
It's not all bad; brands want to be more sustainable and create differently. For example, Girlfriend Collective and American Recycled Clothing are known for using recycled materials.
Retailers are jumping on the resale bandwagon now that secondhand clothes are cool (and profitable)
It feels like apparel retailers are diving into the secondhand clothing market everywhere you look.
Outdoor retailer REI lets you trade in your old gear for a store gift card, Madewell is reselling "pre-loved" jeans, and Urban Outfitters created its resale marketplace where shoppers can buy and sell clothing from its brands and others.
Taken together, these resale initiatives are a sign that apparel retailers finally realize the value — both in a business sense and an environmental sense — in embracing secondhand clothing.

5 Ways to Make Sustainable Fashion the Real MVP of Your Wardrobe
Making clothes is also a highly water-intensive process. For example, over its entire lifecycle—from farming to final disposal—a single pair of jeans requires as much water as a U.S. household uses in three days, according to a study by Levi Strauss & Co.
Brands such as H&M, Zara, and Topshop produce up to 52 weekly "micro-seasons" each year. Meaning instead of just featuring fall and spring collections, fast fashion purveyors roll out new designs for late summer, pre-fall, early winter, and so on.
Prada, Moncler Are Among the Brands Adopting Sustainability Logos
From "sustainable" capsule collections to sneakers made from recycled plastic, companies across the apparel and accessories space – and beyond – are readily looking to cater to rising consumer sentiment around the need to consume more consciously.
While these logos – which clearly aim to communicate sustainability or ESG elements – may be marketing gold in the current market, brands should be careful, as the wave of attempts by consumer-facing companies to bolster their bottom lines by way of ESG messaging has led to evidence that regulators are paying a growing amount of attention to this space.
