Athens locals help sustainable fashion efforts in the community
In Athens, many people contribute to the community's sustainability efforts. Local businesses such as Greendragon Thread, Cricket Jones Jewelry and Coral Marie do their best to help the Athens community be more sustainable in its fashion production by upcycling and reusing materials.
UpCycle Ohio Thrift helps small businesses by providing access to its Community Makerspace. The space is equipped with a tool library where people can check out tools for at-home projects. UpCycle Ohio Thrift also offers a sewing/fabric shop, woodshop and metalwork tools.
To make our wardrobes sustainable, we must cut how many new clothes we buy by 75%
While this seems incredible, it's not. Over the past 15 years, clothing production has doubled while the length of time we actually wear these clothes has fallen by nearly 40%. In the EU, falling prices have seen people buying more clothing than ever before while spending less money in the process.
This is not sustainable. Something has to give. In our recent report, we propose the idea of a well-being wardrobe, a new way forward for fashion in which we favor human and environmental wellbeing over the ever-growing consumption of throwaway fast fashion.

While it certainly is fraught with superficiality and self-congratulation, it’s also an opportunity to make bold statements — whether they be political or otherwise. To that end, then, it’s not surprising that we saw designers finally take steps toward sustainable fashion. BRITISH FASHION JUST TOOK A LEAP FORWARD TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING - THE FASHION TECH INNOVATION CENTRE
KORNIT DIGITAL AND FASHION ENTER LTD LAUNCH THE FASHTECH INNOVATION CENTRE IN THE HEART OF LONDON.
It’s a bold move, and a smart move. One that brings together two change makers in one location. The result is a smart manufacturing hub powered by the latest digital technologies in sync with decades of sewn production skills. The project delivers Smart manufacturing, and signposts a new era of sustainable production on-demand.
When we all talk of nearshore or close proximity production, there is always an unspoken truth. Sewn manufacturing (or CMT to those within the industry) – and its local availability. Textiles once printed, are always cut and sewn into a final product. Supply chain challenges of the last two years have exposed a sewn skills gap, and further highlighted a significant lack of manufacturing knowledge readily available here in the UK – making the reshoring of sewn goods in any volume a difficult proposition.
