To Dry Clean or Not to Dry Clean? Sustainable Fashion Brands Weigh In
Hey there! As someone interested in more clean garments, I'm excited to dive into sustainability in the fashion industry with you. Let's explore whether sustainable brands should encourage dry cleaning and understand the environmental impacts of this practice.
Firstly, it's essential to understand that dry cleaning uses a toxic chemical solvent known as perchloroethylene or "perc." This chemical can harm workers' health and pollute the air and water in the communities where dry cleaners are. However, many dry cleaners are adopting more eco-friendly alternatives, like liquid CO2, which is less harmful to human health and the environment.
I was curious about the perspective of some of my favorite sustainable brands, so I asked them for their opinions on chemical dry cleaning.
Ami Amalia shared, "I don't believe in chemical cleaning, and a product that requires chemical cleaning doesn't have a sustainable design." This resonates with me since sustainability involves reducing harm to the environment and people.
Rachael Elizabeth said this about chemical dry cleaning: "Ok, so personally, I never dry clean anything. I don't think it's worth it, and it's not usually eco-friendly. I prefer to delicate wash my dresses in cold water or hand wash them and hang them to dry. I recommend putting delicate pieces in a delicates bag."
Despite the potential negative impacts of dry cleaning, it can still be a more energy-efficient method for specific fabrics and garments than home laundering. For example, hot water or agitation in a washing machine can damage delicate fabrics like silk and wool, making dry cleaning the recommended option. Additionally, certain types of stains, like those from oil-based products, can be more effectively removed through dry cleaning.
So, should sustainable brands encourage dry cleaning? It depends on the brand, its target audience, and the type of clothing they produce.
Suppose a brand focuses on making high-quality, delicate fabrics that need dry cleaning to maintain their integrity. In that case, it might make sense for them to encourage this method as the most appropriate way to care for the garments. In this case, the brand can promote the use of eco-friendly alternatives to perc, such as liquid CO2.
On the other hand, if a sustainable brand's focus is on creating garments that are easy to care for at home, it may not make sense to encourage dry cleaning. Instead, they could educate customers on how to properly care for the clothes at home in a more eco-friendly way. For example, using cold water to delicate wash dresses and hanging them to dry can be an effective alternative to dry cleaning. A mesh bag can also be used to protect delicate pieces during washing.
In general, sustainable brands should be transparent about the care instructions for their garments and offer customers clear and accurate information on how to care for their clothes in an environmentally friendly way. By doing so, customers can enjoy their garments for a long time, reducing the environmental impact of clothing production and consumption.
So, what can we do as consumers? First, we can choose sustainable brands that align with our values and prioritize eco-friendly practices. We can also educate ourselves on properly caring for our clothes to extend their lifespan and reduce our environmental impact. And, we can support the use of eco-friendly alternatives to perc by choosing dry cleaners that use these methods.
In conclusion, the topic of sustainability in the fashion industry is complex, and whether sustainable brands should encourage dry cleaning is a valid question to explore. Ultimately, it depends on the brand, the clothing, and the audience. As consumers, we can make a difference by choosing eco-friendly practices and supporting sustainable brands. Let's work together to reduce the environmental impact of fashion!
